About the Author
Juan J. de Pablo is the Liew Family Professor at the Institute for Molecular Engineering, University of Chicago, and a former Director of the Materials Science and Engineering Center on Structured Interfaces, University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has won several teaching awards, been awarded a Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering from the NSF and is a Fellow of the APS and AAAS.

Jay D. Schieber is Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Department of Physics, and Director of the Center for Molecular Study of Condensed Soft Matter, at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He has been a visiting professor at universities in both Europe and Asia, holds numerous teaching awards, and was the 2004 Hougen Scholar at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Warning in his introduction that this anthology contains "some of my most obscure work," Wolfe ( Castleview ) goes on to briefly describe the background of the 34 "storeys," which include some intriguing ideas. Unfortunately, the ideas are generally more provocative and interesting than the stories themselves. In "Straw," for example, Wolfe postulates the invention of the hot-air balloon in 500 A.D.; the story, however, about five balloon soldiers carrying pincer maces and searching for food and straw, goes nowhere. Not entirely disappointing, the collection includes such highlights as "In Looking-Glass Castle," "The Recording" and "The Marvelous Brass Chessplaying Automation." Best is "From the Desk of Gilmer C. Merton," a hilarious series of letters between an up-and-coming SF/horror writer and his agent. The bulk of the works remain either frustratingly short ("To the Dark Tower Came," "Continuing Westward"), far too long ("Trip, Trap," "The Rubber Bend") or simply pointless ("The Flag," "Redbeard").

Wolfe is a master of subtlety and misdirection, and his work often requires fairly close reading: these traits are put to good use in ``Slaves of Silver'' and ``The Rubber Bend,'' science- fictional Sherlock Holmes pastiches, and in ``Cherry Jubilee,'' a challenging drawing-room mystery set aboard a Mars-bound spaceship. The stories run the gamut from science fiction to fantasy to horror: ``Sightings at Twin Mounds'' tells of an investigation of UFO reports, with typical Wolfe wit; ``The Packerhaus Method'' describes future improvement in embalming techniques; in ``Straw,'' we get a glimpse of a world in which hot-air balloons were invented in the Dark Ages; and ``Trip/Trap'' offers two intertwined points of view describing first contact with a primitive alien culture. Many of the pieces defy all classification: ``From the Desk of Gilmer C. Merton'' offers a glimpse of author-agent correspondence, while ``Parkroads: A Review'' is told in the form of a film review. Wolfe describes the 34 tales here as ``mostly stories I feel are good, but that have received little or no praise.'' Great book with good info, unfortunately it is filled with misspelled words and grammatical errors. Not sure who edited this book but they failed horribly. Words like "didn't" are spelled "dident", "repeatedly" spelled "repetedly", and almost no apostrophes in the entire book. This made it annoying and a bit frustrating, however the information in the book is excellent. If you can look past the terrible English (which is something I am still trying to do) then it will be a very helpful book.

I recommend this book for the price, but it is missing information in many areas and there are better books out there. No book will take the place of an apprenticeship, and you can't learn a trade from reading, but knowledge is power and the more tattoo books you read the better. For better technical tattoo books I recomend: Reinventing the Tattoo, 2nd Edition Also, this book is excellent: Advanced Tattooing Techniques A Guide To Realism You may also find this book useful: Basic Fundamentals Of Modern Tattoo

This is a great book that is written from a very straight forward point of view. I agree with the previous review regarding the misspelled words, poor grammar, and illusions of being a misguided republican, but Erick Alayon offers good information and great advice for those of us that are just beginning in this field. Grammar is sort of subjective anyway. Who cares what his political affiliations are, we should all be a little different from each other. As always, check advice with your apprenticing master (Boss) or teacher. Read this book. Alayon writes like a "real guy" offering "Real advice."This book recommends that students of tattoo should learn another subject while tattooing and this is an example of the great advice offered in this book. Great idea! Students and hobbyists should read Ayalon's books and thank him for writing them. I recommend this book. Buy this book, take notes, mark it up, digest it, recommend it to friends, apply the knowledge and use the advice.Also check out his "Myspace."

However, I felt it was really dumbed down for someone who has never even walked into a tattoo shop. If you are looking to going into the business, chances are you already know everything outlined in this book.The book is obviously self published as it contains many grammar and spelling mistakes. The type is much larger than need be, so once it arrives you are initially excited about how much information is going to be covered, but then open the cover and realize the text is about 14pt font and does not cover the entire page. Would be much more successful as a Kindle e-book. I purchased it at a reduced price and do NOT believe that it is worth anyone's hard working $25.If you are looking for an instructional book, a how-to tattoo, or even a starting your own tattoo shop book - keep on searching.I own other books that touch on the very same subjects in here - but go into much more depth. Tattoo is a lucrative business with tons of secrets. Needless to say - you are not going to learn everything from a book.This book has major potential, its just needs a major overhaul on the amount and quality of the content.Overall, it was an 'OK' short read.
